民國58年8月，本院前院長王世杰博士鑒於美國文化研究之重要，倡議於中美人文社會科學合作委員會下籌設美國研究中心，並於61年3月12日正式成立。63年7月美國研究中心改設為美國文化研究所，隸屬中央研究院。為因應歐洲研究之需要，美國文化研究所乃於民國80年8月3日更名為歐美研究所，積極推動歐洲研究與延聘人才。現任所長為柯瓊芳博士。
