Selections, by K-Maxx

Selections by K-Maxx, released 29 December 2020 1. I Found You 2. HellaBad 3. So Many Ways 4. Slow Motion 5. Cuddle 6. Swing My Way After a three year hiatus from releasing solo music, producer, songwriter, K-Maxx is back with a new project that picks up where he left off. ‘Selections’ continues the Funk and Soul stylings he's been dropping since 2012's, ‘SupaDrunk’ and 2013's EP with the Sweater Funk crew. An early luminary in the funk resurgence scene (Modern Funk), K-Maxx has remained a stalwart in the genre, releasing projects and collaborations on many of the genres select labels. Where has he been? He's been involved in collaborations during the past couple of years, but no official K-Maxx record. A quote, "Family hardship and tragedy struck and I had to step back for a minute, away from the music. It was always my goal to get back to recording and releasing when the time felt right. The covid-19 pandemic has given me time to take stock of the past, the present and my future path. " ‘Selections', gives supporters of his sound what they might expect. These songs are from a fertile period of writing that proceeded his hiatus. “My mom, who was my heart and my best friend, passed away and I was lost. I didn’t want to think about music for a good while and didn’t know when I would. Slowly, I began to feel a void from not making/releasing music. Then, of course, the pandemic hit us all. I decided to stick to my gut instincts and proceed forward and do the work to complete a project, which I’m calling ‘Selections’. Putting the project together helped me deal with the struggles and pain I was feeling this year and the previous one. The reasoning behind the title and its accompanying artwork was straightforward while nostalgic. “The boombox on the artwork symbolizes the format I first heard and fell in love with this style of music. People almost immediately think Hip Hop when they see a boombox, but growing up in San Francisco any tune that had a groove and some funk to it was blasting out of radios all over the city's neighborhoods. That left an indelible impression on me as a kid and I felt the vibe of this record suited the imagery.” In each song on ‘Selections’ you hear the present day vibes woven into the vibes of a time gone by. The synths on ‘Selections’ have playful conversations with soaring electric guitars and vocals that never lose sight of the funk. The themes on ‘Selections’ revolve around a common one, love or the pursuit of it. “2020 has been tumultuous and devastating to say the least. The songs on this project reflect a singular love, not just a “hit it and ghost” type of energy. I’m tapping into the era when people truly expressed how they felt about each other and did it unabashedly. The bond between two people can be such a powerful union. I want to encourage it through the music. You should dance to it too, even if it's in your PJ's in the living room.
