Birdy, by Ataurean
Birdy by Ataurean, released 22 November 2024 1. Birdy Part 1 (Morphine Sunset) 2. Oyster Catcher 3. Crow 4. Seagull 5. Birdy Part 2 (Morphine Sunrise) 6. Fight Or Flight 7. Birdy Part 3 (Morphine Reprise) 8. Cuckoo Lullaby (Keep Taking The Meds) 9. Birdy Part 3 (Cannulae) 10. Time To Leave 11. Homeward This album was made on a laptop, over the space of two weeks, in a hospital bed, on a cocktail of pain killers. It’s a musical odyssey that runs through all kinds of mad emotions from fear to euphoria. It’s kind of intense, scary and beautiful all at the same time. Yes, you can leave it on and let the sounds float around in the background. But you can also dive in and find out whether you have changed by the time you come out the other side. Ataurean Says: Ok, so... I’ve been a bit ill for the last couple of years, ending up with a six week stint in hospital in April/May 2023 on heavy duty painkillers and a plethora of other meds. This whole album was composed on the laptop in my hospital bed once the pain had subsided… so I guess it’s no surprise that it’s different from my normal fare and heavily inspired by all the birds that came to the window ledge especially a faithful crow I named Joe...the simplest things in life became so important. Having been rushed in with serious pain the initial scans looked really grim and I was told to prepare for the worst. I was totally out of it on a strong cocktail of morphine and other drugs until the pain was manageable. I lost all feeling in my face, hands and feet. I couldn’t even blink and had to tape my eye lids shut at night…It was the scariest time of my life, basically. Thankfully though, after endless tests and biopsies, the worst outcomes were ruled out and I’m now on medication, which has mostly got me back to normal. During the last two weeks in hospital I composed a tune a day on the laptop - through blurred vision - which took me on a journey of recovery and a roller coaster of emotions. The tunes were composed on the spur of the moment and reflect how I was feeling on each day. All done on the laptop so not my usual setup... and haven’t been touched since, apart from mastering. The music, love from friends and family and the daily visits from my wonderful wife kept me going throughout the whole ordeal. I’ve popped out the other end with a new appreciation of life and an affirmation that we should make the most of every moment we have. I hope you enjoy the album and that the uplifting journey I’ve been on comes through in the music… Have a listen and give yourself some time to pause and reflect on what's really important!
