NHSS Summer Institute 2025 Application

Aloha kāua! Are you a Hawaiian student at UH Mānoa (or the UH System) interested in tuition-free classes this summer? Interested in taking classes with other Hawaiian students and taught by Hawaiian faculty and instructors? Or are you a prospective Hawaiian student, returning to complete your degree or pursue another? Want to explore courses outside your discipline, to learn more about Hawaiian history and/or culture? Interested in getting a head-start on your degree requirements, or fulfill credits toward completion? Native Hawaiian Student Services (NHSS) is a student support program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The NHSS Summer Institute program is intended for incoming, transfer, continuing and prospective Native Hawaiian students from all UH campuses. The program offers sheltered coursework over the summer, mostly taught by Hawaiian professors and instructors in a range of disciplines. The sheltered courses (only our program students are in the class) means that the course is tuition-free for registrants, only requiring enrollees to pay for the course and student fees (~$150/course and an additional $87 for in-person and hybrid courses for on campus fees). The NHSS Summer Institute program outcomes & benefits: Tuition-free for-credit coursework in a range of disciplines offered first-come, first-serve to Hawaiian students (students need to pay for course and student fees ~$150/course, and an additional $87 for any in-person or hybrid courses) Hawaiian-focused coursework taught by Hawaiian faculty, instructors & doctoral students Sheltered courses (only our program students are in the class), some of which are not offered during the academic year PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: NHSS will consider the following applicants in the following priority groups: (1) Continuing degree-seeking UH Mānoa Hawaiian students; (2) Incoming degree-seeking UH Mānoa Hawaiian students, either new freshman or transfer students; (3) UH System community college Hawaiian students intending to transfer to UH Mānoa; (4) Department of Education kumu or others seeking professional development opportunities; (5) All other UH System students; (6) High school students intending to attend UH Mānoa; and (7) Hawaiian community members that are prospective UH Mānoa or UH System students; Must apply to Outreach College and/or seek approval (campus exemptions, etc.) for the summer term by their deadline in order to register for courses. Must attend a one-hour online program orientation with NHSS team prior to receiving the Course Registration Number (CRN) to register for course. Must attend 2 NHSS Summer Institute workshops & 1 NHSS Mālama ʻĀina Work Day per summer term enrolled. Must complete program evaluation and survey at the end of program. Pending seat availability (most courses max out at 20), we are opening these courses up to prospective students, as well as public school teachers in the Hawaiʻi Department of Education. We will review your request after first prioritizing UH Mānoa students. We will review your request and get back to you on next steps, including registration. In our follow up with you, you will be required to attend an online orientation, after which we will provide you the CRN to register for the course. In some cases, student registrants will also be provided the textbooks for free, only requiring you to pick it up from our office at UH Mānoa (or accommodations to mail it to you). FOR NON-UH MĀNOA CONTINUING STUDENTS If you are not a UH Mānoa student currently, you will have to apply to Outreach College to obtain proper credentials for registration. Outreach College Summer Scholars program will consider high school students who have completed their Sophomore or Junior year of high school by Summer 2025 and have: a 3.5 GPA; the maturity and motivation required to complete university-level course work; and parent/guardian approval. Deadline for the Summer Scholars program is April 15, 2025. If you a current UH System student (and not UH Mānoa), you may be able to request a campus override from Outreach College to take these courses. Follow-up with Outreach College directly to inquire on your status and eligibility. Email them at [email protected] for campus restriction overrides. IN-PERSON COURSES Health clearance and other university requirements for in-person coursework will need to be maintained for all enrolled students. We look forward to meeting you!
